I started a freshwater nano tank in my office, 2.5 gallons, a month ago with 3 hardy Pearl Danios to build up the nitrogen cycle. In classic new tank style, 2 of the danios have already gone to fishy heaven, leaving me with just 1 hyperactive danio.
I introduced 3 small Black Neon tetras to the tank this morning and the danio has been nothing but a bully to his new tank-mates: nipping fins, chasing them into the pants on the sides of the tank , and then patrolling the center of the tank not letting anyone swim freely. I thought danios were non-aggressive......should I remove the danio from the tank? My plan was always to have black neon tetras in the tank once it had been established.....
Well, first of all you should remove the pants from the tank - 2.5 gallons is too small for pants.
Then the fish will have more space, and you could put in some plants.
Seriously, I would just give it a couple of days.
Because there are three tetras, the danio's aggression will be distributed among them, so they should be okay, and the situation may well settle down.
If you're really concerned, you could put him in a breeding trap or some other floating container (which allows water flow) for a few hours or a day, and this might calm him down and reset his territorial sense.
