Are Certain Diamond Cuts More Expensive Than Others?
Are certain diamond cuts more expensive than others? well first, let the record be cleared up right now, regarding a diamond's “cut,” as distinguished from its shape. Both are important, but they are not the same thing. A diamond's cut is the geometry of how the cutter physically aligns each angle of the diamond, so that the maximum amount of light is reflected up through the crown, giving the Gem the best possible appearance and “fire” (which is just an expression, as diamonds are actually pure carbon, and rather cold to the touch).
What costs the most for a gem cutter to do may not be reflected in the cost to the consumer. Supply and demand play a significant role in a diamond's overall price, but sometimes little tricks are built in.
There are ten standard shapes of diamonds: Round, which is also known as round brilliant; Asscher, which is the rarest cut; Cushion; Pear; Oval; Emerald; Princess; Radiant; and Heart. Shapes other than round are often referred to as “fancy,” and sold for higher prices. Interestingly enough, however, those shapes may actually be easier for the gem cutter to craft, leading to lower costs for the jeweler. Of course, in the interests of higher profit margins, the jeweler may claim to merely be “passing on” higher prices to the consumer, knowing that most people would believe something more complex-looking is more difficult, and thus more expensive at the wholesale end of things.
As a cut becomes more popular, its price obviously goes up. Supply and demand is constant and universal. For instance, the Princess cut, which is actually reasonably easy to fashion, as it works with the natural crystalline structure of the diamond, is sold for a higher price. This occurs not just because of its popularity, however – the squared edges of the princess cut mean the jeweler needs to remove less material, and can thus sell the resulting “larger” diamond for more money.
The most expensive shape of all diamonds is the Asscher, because it is legally only crafted by the Asscher family in Amsterdam. Because of its popularity, the round shape is the second most expensive, as a general rule. Although as other cuts become more popular, they can temporarily supplant the round, leading to occasions where “fancy” equals “higher priced.”
If you wonder, are certain diamond cuts more expensive than others, you now have your answer.A diamond's price is primarily predicated by supply and demand. Perception is reality.
