SPINEL- AN IMPOSTOR FROM HISTORY THAT MAKES A GREAT GIFT TODAY
A Gemstone in a wide range of colors, a dazzling brilliance and a hard texture that most gemstone lovers would vie for, but the tag of being an impostor- wondering what it is? To put an end to all your confusion, let us tell you all about this stone that is considered to be one of the biggest impostors in the history of Gemstones- the spinel. Spinel is the loveliest creation of nature in the realm of gemstones. Truly natural and a beautiful gemstone, Spinel belongs to that rare species of gems that are neither treated nor enhanced.
The exquisiteness of the vivid brilliant assortment of hues available in this stone enchants anybody who happens to catch a glimpse of it. The name of this gemstone has been derived from ‘spina’, the Latin word meaning “thorn”, an indication to its pointed barbed shape. Pure form of this stone comes in white color and the various colors that you see are due to the impurities present in the Gem. Therefore the different kinds of spinel available are Ruby Spinel (color-red), black Pleonast, blue Cobalt Spinel, Almandine Spinel (color-violet), etc.
But just why is it called an imposter? Well the answer lies in the fact that it exhibits the beauty, brilliance, luster and color of Precious Stones like sapphire and ruby at almost a fraction of their price. And therefore cobalt spinel has been passed off as sapphire and red spinel as a ruby in many imperial crowns! Many ‘Rubies’ embedded in The Crown Jewels throughout the world, in reality, are spinels. The one that tops the list is called the Black Prince’s Ruby; an exquisite red spinel (170 carat) that presently embellishes the Imperial State Crown (British). After having gone through a lengthy history, it is said that Henry V wore the stone on his battle helmet. The other example is ‘Timur Ruby’, a red spinel (352 carat) currently in possession of Queen Elizabeth.
It was recognized as a separate specie of gem first in Burma in the year 1587.Some of its most beautiful hues are found here (e.g. the ‘balas ruby’). Though these are assumed to be ‘synthetic’, being mistaken for the imitation birthstone pendants or rings, these gemstones are very rare. The finer varieties are rarer than even rubies that they once imitated.
So what makes this gem a great gift? As already mentioned, it is now rarer than even a ruby. Its beautiful colors, rich brilliance makes it look stunning when used in jewelry. Nowadays it finds its use in fashion jewelry, cut into round, oval, cushion shapes. The lovely items have spinels embedded in yellow gold (mostly 18 carat). It is hard, durable and does not even need any extra care (clean it with soap water and a soft brush). Though really rare, it is comparatively inexpensive for what it is really worth. It works well for all those who want to gift a lovely gemstone to their loved ones, without having to spend as they would have to on a ruby. Though you might call it an impostor, a spinel gives you the rarity of a ruby at a small fraction of its price.
