Why do crystals grow better in the dark?

Constant temperature is very important in growing crystals. Dark areas have essentially a constant temperature by the absence of light. This is the main reason why crystals grow better in the dark. Convection is also the enemy of a man's growing crystals. Since light is missing in a dark environment that is heat stable, therefore, very little or no convection takes place in the dark. Thus, crystallization at its best.
