Buying engagement ring, confused on what all this means? HELP!?
I am searching around for an engagement ring. My girlfriend use to work for a jewelry store so she knows her stuff and obviously it will ruin the surprise if I ask her about what is good. For a Diamond Engagement Ring I do not want to ask what is good from the store clerk because he will see right through me that I know NOTHING and will suck me into his commission based sales. What does SI mean as well as KYG or YG or VS or CT or "solitaire" or "brillant" or "round". What are the things I should be looking for? See what I mean. Very confusing. Nothing too expensive for I am not rich. Thanks for the help.
I'm not sure what all your abbreviations mean, though CT could be short for carat (the weight of the diamond, basically it's size). Solitaire means a single diamond on a band with no side stones. Brilliant and round are two words for essentially the same cut of the stone - I've seen some places where the brilliant cut may have more facets, thus making it more sparkly.
As for not asking the clerk at the jewelry store - that's what they're there for honey! Where are you shopping where they work on commission? Go to one of the stores at the mall, like JBR or Kay's or Littman's - I'm pretty sure the people who work there get paid an hourly wage or at least a salary, not on a commission. If there's a local jeweler you trust, go there - the local place in my town is always happy to provide information with no pressure to buy.
