Emerald Gemstone
What do I need to start learning a hobby in rock and Gem hunting?

I have about 50 acres in North Carolina that has not been commercial hit. There is also a creek running into this same property. I was playing the lottery and a friend told me he would have more luck find a jewel, which made me think. I know NC is rich in Emeralds and other Precious Stones, including gold in some areas. I know I can go out with a shovel and pick, but I'm not sure what to look for, and some gems are locked in rock or hard to notice. Any suggestions as to how to begin to realize probable locations and resources who would benefit from would be appreciated. I imagine that even if I did not find anything, at least its good exercise and it would be fun. I await your answers, thanks.

I started collecting things like this with my father many years before it was trendy. What is a fun place to live! I can provide information how, since I buy from people who do what he wants. But I know that there are many clubs in various parts of the country, not to mention online forums talk about it. I think a good starting point might be that through these online, see if there is a group near you that could participate, learn, or connect with someone who could teach like this is well in hand. And it would be good to meet some people, find out who is trustworthy and established before allowing people in their land, here is a site dedicated to rock clubs in the U.S.; http://www.Rockhounds.com/rockshop/clublist. shtml There are many in your state. I get around, see if they have outtings, see who can teach, and some may even have some old supplies to sell etc. If I were you I'd learn more, because of have seen the jewelry in its natural state, it is easy to miss them and would be a shame for you to do that or break some separation. I'd learn first and then expect to find some treasures. I know that many stones are usually found in certain formations, so that gambling in your area may also give heads up on what to look so, and narrow down the only needle in a haystack. And here are the Yahoo Groups dedicated to her; http://dir.groups.yahoo.com/dir/Hobbies___Crafts/Collecting/Rocks, _Gems, _and_Minerals I'd like all my old bookmarks on this computer but on the CD. I usebd to have much more of this and has done more research. But these should be enough for you to go I think. Found a site that had found more interesting that might help. http://mineral.galleries.com/minerals/physical.htm This is where you can look to each mineral and get an idea of what the rough looks like and the different types and information etc. If you go to the main page there are tons other areas. Sounds fun to me .... hope you have much success with it!
