Question about a baby pigeon, please help?
I had a nest with 2 baby pigeons that were doing fine, parents were taking care of, etc. The are abou 3-4 weeks old, have feathers but dont eat by thereselves. Very mean and tries to bite me if I try to pick up.
Last night I came home from work late to find my broom laying out in the middle of my porch and looked up and seen no pigeons in nest so I knew something bad had happened as there are so really crazy people where I live and the kids here are always harrassing the pigeons or squirrels, cats etc.
This morning I looked around my porch and found one baby dead and obviously beaten with my broom as the handle had blood on it and the intestines were hanging out of the bird and head obviously stepped on. I found the other alive and brought him in. His mother is very upset and looking but I can't get her to come in and can't put bird back out because kids are always up here and will kill this bird. We are going to take him to the apsca on tuesday but need to feed him for now.
Pigeons eat from INSIDE their parents mouth. So, mix corn meal, baby cereal (any kind) into a soupy paste, put it into a medicine bottle (like small perscription) or shot glass, Hold the glass sideways and put his head in, try to dredge his beak and see if you can get him to eat. You can very carfully open his mouth and put some in, I use a syringe, or put in whole pieces of grain, split peas, popcorn kernals (no beans). Make sure he has water. Keep bird seed near, he make eat on his own, and keep the cage covered with a light colored cloth so he isn't scared of all the movement around him.
