Precious Stones vs. semi-precious stones is not a scientific categorization. Traditionally, the gems - diamond, ruby, sapphire, Emerald and Amethyst included - were much harder to get than other gems, such as Hematite, Quartz, jade, Carnelian, Turquoise, etc. Because of their rarity, cost of much more precious, so they are outside the reach of common people. Their use was the nobility and the clergy, which limited increases their mysticism. But "rare" is changing.
