i love pearls and i have seen many but do not really know much about them. what is the difference in freshwater and cultured pearls? and is it better to buy pearls that say such things as "South Sea Pearls" or "tahitian pearls"?
the difference between natural and cultured pearls is that the natural ones were formed becuse of parasites/debris entered the shell of the oyster, and it tried to defend itself by covering it. the cultured pearls are man-made by introducing something into the oyster purposely, causing it to defend itself by covering the intrusion. i am not sure exactly what they put in the oyster, though.
as far as i know South Sea pearls are of high quality, they don't necessarily come from seas in the South.
